Crochet Reinforcement

There is a column of 3 stockinette stitches running along the center of the front of the sweater. There will be 1.5 stitches on each side of the steek.

Use the linked crochet reinforcement instructions from Tin Can Knits to reinforce half of stitch 1 with half of stitch 2 and half of stitch 2 with half of stitch 3.

DO NOT cut the steek yet. You need to pick up stitches for the front panels before the yarn is cut to prevent compromising the reinforcement.

Front Panels

Use smaller needles for both panels.

Right Band

With the right side of the sweater facing you, starting at the bottom edge and working toward the collar, pick up and knit 4 out of every 5 stitches on the right side of the crochet reinforcement.

Row 1: (k1, p1) across

Work 2.5” / 6 cm of (k1, p1) ribbing as established.

Bind off in pattern.

Left Band

With the right side of the sweater facing you, starting at the collar and working down the body of the sweater, pick up and knit 4 out of every 5 stitches on the left side of the crochet reinforcement.

Row 1: (k1, p1) across

Work 2.5” / 6 cm of (k1, p1) ribbing as established.

Bind off in pattern.

Steek!

Now that you’ve completed the crochet reinforcements and front panels, it’s time to cut down the middle of stitch 2 in the diagram above. Use the linked instructions from Tin Can Knits.
